At Astigarraga Kit Line, wood is our essence, and what defines us. That is why today’s International Day of Forests has a special meaning for us. In 2025, under the theme “Forests and Food”, we want to share with you the reasons why this day is so important and why we should all take part in the celebration.
1. Forests are the lungs of our planet
Forests cover one third of the Earth’s surface and are key allies in the fight against climate change. They act as large carbon sinks, storing huge amounts of CO2 and helping to regulate our planet’s climate. In addition, trees purify the air we breathe, improving the quality of life in our cities and natural environments.
2. Forests are a source of life and biodiversity
According to the United Nations, forests are home to more than 80% of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. From the smallest mammals to the very largest, forests are home to countless species that depend on them in order to survive. This rich diversity is valuable to the natural balance which sustains us all.
3. Forests provide food and sustenance.
This year, the theme is forests and food, to honour the fundamental role forests play in food security, nutrition and our means of sustenance. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) notes that more than 5 billion people around the world use forests and forest products for food, medicine and livelihood. Forests and trees are a rich source of nuts, fruits, seeds, roots, mushrooms, honey… which provide essential nutrients to people’s dietary consumption.

4. Forests are guardians of freshwater
In addition to regulating the climate, protecting biodiversity, providing food and storing carbon, forests also play a key role in the water cycle. They act as huge natural sponges, absorbing and filtering rainwater, regulating river flow and preventing flooding. In fact, forests are responsible for 85% of the freshwater provided to the world’s major cities.
5. They contribute to our health and wellbeing
Forests benefit both the environment and our health. Spending time in nature reduces stress, boosts our mood and strengthens the immune system. They also provide us with spaces to relax, enjoy and connect with nature, which is something that is increasingly valuable in a world full of rushing and noise. By walking among the trees, we breathe cleaner air and disconnect from daily stresses, which helps us to find balance and inner peace.

6. Forests are a sustainable source of resources
At Astigarraga Kit Line, we understand the importance of using forest resources responsibly and sustainably. When properly managed, forests can provide a renewable source of materials such as wood, which is the essence of our products. Since our inception over 40 years ago, we have been committed to the use of local and sustainable timber, contributing to the circular economy and the preservation of our surrounding forests.

Our commitment to forests
As a company that works with wood, here at Astigarraga Kit Line are very aware of our responsibility towards forests. From our early days in 1983, when Juan José Astigarraga set up a small workshop to manufacture pine wood trestles, to becoming a benchmark in the DIY and decoration sector, we have always maintained a deep respect for nature and the forests that surround us. We have grown up surrounded by trees and our company is located in the mountains of the Urola Valley. From our windows, we see the forests that teach us the value of sustainability every day.
Our commitment is reflected in every product we make. We use pine wood from sustainably managed forests, insisting that for every tree that is felled, several more are planted. In addition, our production process is designed to minimise waste and make the most of every piece of wood.

A call to action
International Forest Day is more than just a date in the calendar; it is a reminder that we must take action. Our forests are under threat from deforestation, habitat loss and climate change, and it is time to do something to protect them.
At Astigarraga Kit Line, we believe that we can all do our bit. Choosing certified wood makes a difference. This 21st March, we invite you to join this cause. Let us make the most of this day to think about how important forests are and to commit to caring for them. Because to protect them today is to secure the future for generations to come.
Happy International Forest Day! Where it all begins.
